The Singapore stock market continues to face challenges, with only four Catalist listings recorded in 2024. This prolonged drought in new listings highlights the ongoing struggle to attract companies to the local bourse, raising concerns about its competitiveness and vibrancy.

In contrast, Malaysia has emerged as the regional leader in new listings this year, surpassing Indonesia. This shift underscores the increasing competition Singapore faces from its neighbors, as companies explore more favorable markets for their initial public offerings.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the Singapore government has established a committee led by a Cabinet Minister to address the issue. The committee is tasked with identifying the root causes behind the bourse’s stagnation and proposing actionable recommendations to rejuvenate the local stock market. Efforts are underway to create a more dynamic and attractive marketplace that appeals to both issuers and investors.

Despite the challenges, I remain optimistic about the Singapore stock market’s potential for recovery. With the combined efforts of the government, industry stakeholders, and the Singapore Exchange, the groundwork is being laid for a robust rebound.
