In summary:

At the Singapore Corporate Awards 2023 held at the Ritz Carlton Hotel last night, Guest of Honour, Minister Dr Tan See Leng, said that robust corporate governance fosters an environment where decisions are made with accountability and responsibility – a prerequisite for successful business performance and sustainable growth. He emphasised that a successful business must not just generate profits, it also has to positively impact all of its stakeholders.

Good governance is unquestionably the cardinal factor that cannot be over-emphasised in the corporate world. Companies fail when directors are tardy or adopt a lackadaisical attitude in internal controls and regulatory compliance. Recent enforcement actions and criminal penalties meted out to errant directors have awaken common senses that all directors, including independent directors, cannot be inept or slumbering in respect of their statutory and fiduciary duties.
